Description

This 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280S has been in the seller’s family since his father purchased the car new in 1970. Both the seller and his brother drove the car while in high school, and the pair recently worked to recommission it after a period of idleness. The refurbishment included rebuilds of the cylinder head, automatic transmission, and brake master cylinder, along with the addition of new rubber brake hoses on three of the four wheels. The car wears its original brown paint, MB-Tex interior, and California blue plates. It is sold with extensive records dating back to the 1970s and a clean California title. This Mercedes was driven regularly until it became a second car and ultimately went into storage in the early 2000s. The brown paintwork is said to be all original, and the car retains its factory wheels and hubcaps. Some rust is noted on the rockers, notably below the rear doors. The car was originally purchased on the East coast but only stayed there about a year before coming to California, where it has resided since. The blue plates have been with the car since then. This car retains its original US-specification lighting and trim. When viewed up close, the original paintwork has a healthy shine and good depth thanks to recent buffing. The interior appears very nicely preserved, with original dash wood still affixed and in crack-free condition. This car is equipped with factory air conditioning and power windows. Currently there are a few minor issues, including non-functional A/C, right front window, radio, and the front interior light will drop loose from its mount. The clock is a quartz replacement from Mercedes, not the original unit for the car. MB-Tex is famously hard-wearing, and the original upholstery has held up very well front and rear. The door panels retain their correct trim and look to be in nice shape. The heaviest wear in the interior is present on the floor mats, where the rubber heel guard under the pedal box has deteriorated. The perforated headliner is in good condition with no apparent sagging or staining. In order to recommission the car, the 2.8L inline-six recently received a top end rebuild. The automatic transmission was rebuilt at the same time. The underhood surfaces do not appear to have been refinished, and everything has a light patina consistent with the age and mileage. The wheel cylinders were cleaned out during the recommissioning process, and three of the four rubber brake hoses were replaced. Some fine tuning is still required, but the seller’s uncle just completed a 90 minute highway trip with the car with no issues.
